Zoo Box page 7

More Zoo Box

Thank you winter break. Being a teacher means that I don't really get much done during the year. But when I have a break my productivity makes me weep with joy. Zoo Box is now almost 1/2 inked. Here's page six colored for your enjoyment.

FIrst 5 pages of a new book

Here are five pages from a book that my wife and I wrote together over a year ago called, The Zoo Box. My hope was that it would be published by my publisher Blue Apple Books, but it appears that this will probably not happen. It is a slightly darker story than Dog Park and Cat Dance. I am so happy with it. If I just had a month off from work I could finish the whole thing. Anybody want to publish this? Seriously? Write me. NoBrow, Koyama, First Second, Toon Books, Secret Acres? Height and length will be the same dimensions as the Fanta Peanuts books. The Zoo Box could be 1 in 3 short stories in a 120-160 ish page book. Ariel's already telling me no to the black borders. What do you think? Black gutter/boarders or no?

Laugh-out-loud funny, chilling, and meditative, Big Plans collects Aron Nels Steinke's most intimate and relatable stories. With a unique sense of timing, these are incredibly readable comics that are hard to put down. Stories ranging from fear of terrorism, alcoholism, and a shooting at the mall, to a behind the curtain's look at the Academy Awards, Big Plans stands out as one of the most compelling works to come out of the modern DIY movement.

BIG PLANS: The Collected Mini-Comics and More collects Big Plans #1 - #5 and stories from Papercutter #9, Nerd Burglar, Song-Zine and Runner Runner.

Steinke’s work has a heartfelt touch that makes what could have been a collection of mundane stories a hilarious and endearing triumph… Entertaining to read over and over again.” Graphic Novel Reporter

"...Get acquainted with one of the best young underground cartoonists on the scene." The Onion’s A.V. Club

“…Sometimes there is a six panel grid, sometimes four panels per spread, sometimes the spread is one big panel. All are smooth transitions. Aron is someone who is very, very comfortable with the way that he sets up his “reveals” and his punchlines and gags. This is excellent cartooning. Excellent cartooning that is well written.” Frank Santoro, The Comics Journal

Short Run and BCGF plus two new books!

Good news everyone. If you’re in the Seattle area come check out this year’s Short Run small press festival. This Saturday at the Vera Project. I will have two new books: Mr. Wolf, my first year teaching elementary school. I folded and stapled these books myself, people. Second is my 360-page collection of my mini-comics, Big Plans, and other short stories, including my story of paranoia and paranormal activity from Papercutter # 9 (Published by Bridge City Comics).

Also, next weekend I will be in Brooklyn for the BCGF. I have heard so many good things about both festivals and excited that I can finally be there. If you’re around come and say hello. I’ll even have Mr. Wolf buttons for sale.

Big Plans, the collection

The book I'd always hoped for is finally here. Big Plans - The Collected Mini-Comics and More. Published by Bridge City Comics. It fits perfectly in your hand. A perfect book. I am so happy. This book includes Big Plans 1, Fan Mail and My Best Memory Ever from Big Plans 2, All of Big Plans 3, 4, 5, He Lives in Our Basement from Papercutter 9, and several never before printed stories. This book took me a full two months to edit and produce (pre-press) during the summer. My whole summer vacation went to this project. And my baby of course.

Mr. Wolf page 49

Sorry for the delay folks. In a perfect world I'd teach half-time, get paid twice as much and draw comics with my mind.

Marv Newland is the Best!

Just got this letter from my old teacher from Vancouver Film School, the infamous Marv Newland. I can't tell you how important this man was to me as a fledgling cartoonist. I sent him some books and a query about me visiting my old school to do a comics talk. I love his drawing of Erika and Neptune.

Marv has some many amazing films, most recently, from the NFB. CMYK looks amazing. He's probably most famous for Bambi Meets Godzilla and Tales from the Far Side. If you're never seen Black Hula, you are in for a treat...

Also he's got a series of postcard experiments going on over on his tumblr, Marv Cards.

In his letter, the foul language he's referring to comes from Big Plans, a book which has not been published in French. Neptune has, but here's to hoping. Maybe the collection will. Yes, there is a collection happening. Very, very soon. It's at the printer in Quebec as we speak. More info. coming soon.

Bozo the Teacher page 36

Above are two versions of the same comic. The bottom version was the original one I posted and immediately I knew I got the tone wrong. It implies that the student is somehow less than intelligent because he wants to connect with nature and that I am a ruthless tyrant, out of a Roald Dahl novel, bent on the destruction of children's freedoms everywhere. I think I fixed this by just changing the title of the comic to the one above. Believe me, no body is more pro-tree climbing than I.

Sunday, June 3, 2012

Hey everyone, I've created a tumblr page for new bozo the teacher comics called Mr. Wolf. This new page will be devoted to only Bozo comics. Please check it out and follow it if you like it. This new technology stuff annoys me and I don't really feel like I have the time nor want to really promote it so I need your help. If enough people are interested I may even make a short animated film based on the strips. New comics will still appear here and on my facebook page.
